Shelburne Farms, the Vermont Estate of Lila Vanderbilt Webb

If your looking for a great weekend escape and want to live in Vanderbilt Gilded Age style, The Webb family's Vermont mansion is an Inn, called Shelburne Farms. I have stayed there and it is like a step back in time. http://www.shelburnefarms.org/

If you can't get there, read the book!  The House at Shelburne Farms

You are right about Shelburne. One feels as if the owners have just stepped out and you are guests for the weekend. The Inn contains approx. 80% of the families original furnishings right down to their book collection lining the library shelves and the childrens antique toys up on the third floor playroom. An amazing home and a great tribute to the families desire to preserve their historic estate not demolish it. The emphasis on sustainability, organic farming and respect for the natural environment also are worthy endeavors undertaken on the families vast property.
