The Servant Question at Harbor Hill

Here is a great article about the servants and their world at the Clarence Mackay estate, Harbor Hill, which was located at Roslyn, New York. Harbor Hill was considered to be the greatest country estate on Long Island's Gold Coast. Designed in 1902 by architect Stanford White for Silver King Heir Clarence Mackay and his wife Katherine Duer Mackay.

Although there are a lot of editing problems, at least in the mobile version, it was a very interesting look behind the scene. I love the old photos that, thankfully, documented so much.

I came across this article in the course of some research some thirty years ago, had completely forgotten about it. A marvelous rare look into the downstairs life on this side of the Atlantic. And fascinating to see the servants quarters, like the butler's room

One wonders, though about the unqualified love of the servants for their mistress....a bit rosy

I also found it funny how they called, Harbor Hill charming. It's not a word to describe that house.
