Four Fountains, One of the last jewels of Southampton, New York was recently demolished. Originally built in 1928, by architects, Peabody, Wilson & Brown as a playhouse for the Lucien Tyng family who had their main residence across the road. The playhouse was later converted into a residence by Eleanor Brown, the founder of the McMillen Interior Design firm. In 1978 the house was bought by CBS Chairman, William Paley. Paley displayed his famous collection of art there. Often mentioned as also being the home of his socially prominent wife, Babe Paley, she never lived in this house. After her death, William Paley bought Four Fountains, since he found it hard to live without his wife at their Manhasset estate, Kaluna Farm. Owned now for years after William Paley died by the same owners, they recently sold the estate and the new owners, while wanting to retain the history of the property, decided to demolish the main part of the house to build a larger house. The entrance gates with bronze falcons mounted on the gate piers and the two flanking wings will be saved. The main entrance facade, now gone, is supposed to be rebuilt with the new structure behind. The images in this post show the building as it was when a Studio/ Playhouse for the Tyng family. Read today’s Southampton Press article by Anne Surchin, with who I wrote the book, “Houses of the Hamptons 1880-1930”, which has Four Fountains as one the 35 chapters. https://www.27east.com/home-garden/four-fountains-a-bittersweet-end-with-a-new-beginning-1666688/  Purchase, "Houses of the Hamptons 1880-1930" HERE on Amazon.
