Barrett's father was manager of the Newport Casino, and the author, himself, had, for thirty-eight years, the same seats in the Casino grandstand during the tennis week matches.

It is a wonderful book, and of course, Amory's "The Last Resorts" still stands as the definitive work about the Gilded age resorts. Good reads indeed
